Grow your own avocado tree!
Last April, I read that you can grow an avocado tree by sticking it in a glass of water until it sprouts roots, then planting it. We decided to give it a try. With some patience, steroids fertilizer, and a lot more steroids of love, it worked!
Here is a pic of the avocado tree last September, shortly after planting the little guy in real dirt.
And here's some pics I took today. Look at him go! Reach for the sky, little avocado tree. Kristi needs some guacamole.

Hey your avocado tree is doing really great! How long before he gives you some fruit?
Oh. My. Goodness. My husband is so jealous! He's tried 3-4 times, to grow an avacado tree, and I've been patient, but after 3 months of NO CHANGE AT ALL, I've thrown the seeds away. Could you give us a detailed play-by-play? He's even gone so far as to find a place online that sells avacado trees, but they're $40+. He'd absolutely LOVE it if he could grow one.
Thanks! LauraC
Hi Laura. Sorry you had such a hard time growing an avocado. We followed the instructions at this link:

And we also had a cheap $10 grow light from Walmart on the seed while it was in the glass. That seemed to help. Otherwise it's been pretty low maintenance. After we planted it, I used to forget to water it for long periods of time. So I would guess it doesn't mind being a bit dry? Good luck!
Thanks Kristi! Josh did the same thing with the toothpicks and all, with no luck. But we'll try again, now that we know it can be done!
